"We are happy to spend Arbor Day with the first graders of Toll Gate, to plant this tree, to hear their thoughts about trees and to help keep Pennington a Tree City".

A bur tree will be planted - at the site behind the Degel Israel Synagogue - to highlight the importance of continued tree planting efforts to mitigate the effects of tree loss as the city prepares for the Emerald Ash Borer.

As city officials seek to clear a large backlog of trees that require trimming or removal, the new tree commission will identify replacement trees, recognizing the benefits trees bring to a city.

Previous year the Village of Warwick DPW dug the hole & placed the Sesquicentennial Sugar Maple Tree honoring Roger Metzger prior to the Arbor Day celebration held at Stanley-Deming Park.

For more than 40 years, people who live in Tree City USA communities have enjoyed the benefits of having greener, healthier places to live.

"Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand", said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. Trees can lower costs for storm water management and help reduce energy consumption.

This will be the 34th year that the Village of Warwick has received national recognition as a Tree City USA.

To earn the titles of Tree Campus USA and Tree City USA, recipients must practice the five core standards such as establishing and maintaining a campus tree advisory committee, following a campus tree care plan, verifying dedicated annual expenditures for tree care, observing Arbor Day and instituting a service learning project with the student body or community.
