Didi receives greenlight to begin testing self-driving cars in California

Expanding its presence across the globe, Chinese ride-hailing firm Didi Chuxing (DIDI) has been granted a permit to test self-driving cars in California. In fact a couple of years ago, Uber had ceded their market share in China to Didi Chuxing by selling their business to the Chinese company. The company has, until very recently, focused its efforts at its home market, but as of last month, it made its first steps towards operating in Mexico.

Didi's move comes not long after its U.S. rival Uber was forced to suspend its self-driving auto tests right across the country following a fatal accident with a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona in March. Its successful effort to secure a self-driving auto testing permit from California puts it much closer to its goals of having functional autonomous vehicles and gives it a small foothold in the American market. The list also mentions Apple which shouldn't be surprising as it has been known that Apple is testing out the technology, although just like Apple, it is unclear as to what Didi Chuxing plans to use its self-driving tech for.
