Following the procedure, President Trump spoke with doctors, and later traveled by his Marine One helicopter to the hospital to visit his wife. The First Lady is in good spirits and she is resting.

First lady Melania Trump underwent the procedure and will remain in the hospital for the week.

On Monday, Grisham announced the procedure upon its completion in a statement, writing, "This morning, First Lady Melania Trump underwent an embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney condition".

The Dark Tower writer's screed came within hours of the news that Mrs. Melania had received treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for a benign kidney condition.

It did not take long before prominent people on social media used Trump's hospitalization to attack her marriage with President Donald Trump. "Thank you for so much love and support!" he tweeted.

She is the first United States first lady to undergo such a serious medical procedure while in the White House since Nancy Reagan had a mastectomy in October 1987. They have a 12-year-old son, Barron.

Earlier this month, the first lady unveiled the initiative she plans to focus on during her time at the White House the "Be Best" awareness campaign aimed at helping children. Mrs. Trump also represented the administration at the April funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush. Trump has acknowledged reimbursing his lawyer for the payment to Stormy Daniels but denies her allegations.

The first lady lived full time in NY during the administration's opening months so Barron would not have to change schools midyear.
