Jack Leach: Somerset and England spinner breaks left thumb

England spinner Jack Leach will play no part in the series against Pakistan after he broke his left thumb in warm-ups during a County Championship match against Hampshire.

The 26-year-old suffered the injury while warming up for Somerset on Monday before the fourth day of their Division One match against Hampshire.

He immediately dropped his bat and was doubled up in agony before leaving the net and eventually returning to the Taunton pavilion. "It's too early to know how long he will be out for at the moment", the tweet said.

England suffered a blow before Tuesday's selection for the first Test of the summer against Pakistan at Lord's next week when Jack Leach was ruled out with a broken thumb.

At the top of the order, Alastair Cook may get yet another opening partner, with Mark Stoneman now short of runs. Middlesex opener Nick Gubbins has scored 107 and 99 in his last two championship innings and could be in line for a test debut.

Leach's likely unavailability for the first Test against Pakistan, which starts at Lord's on May 24, could mean a reprieve for Moeen Ali. The second test takes place at Headingley starting June 1.
