In April 2018, Sonoma State University was apparently cited by California's state auditor for its failure to meet standards for protection against hazardous materials.

University officials would not say Sunday night whether the victim or the suspect was enrolled at the university.

After a search of the surrounding area, the suspect was taken into custody. In an 87-page report, state auditor Elaine Howle claimed that Sonoma "did not completely comply with requirements related to the oversight of health and safety policies, training and the inspection of laboratory safety equipment", and that the college had failed to conduct regular inspections of "critical safeguards".

Neither the victim or the suspect have been identified.

"I was just walking back from the library and saw the guy, and he had blood covering both of his hands and I saw the girl", the woman said.

"We heard some screaming and I ran outside to see what was going on, because it was obvious; no joking around, screaming", said Stickels. Stickels recalled how "his arm was all bloody and he was carrying a knife".

"I don't know, it's kind of scary", said Rodarmel, a junior. And he looked at me and he said, "I was attacked".

The two men were on campus visiting friends when the fight broke out at the apartment, Lyons said.

'It wasn't his injuries. "He was moving fine", he said.

Sauvignon Village is a residential community for first-year students and consists of four-bedroom, four-bathroom apartments with a shared kitchen and living room.

The victim was found in an upstairs apartment of the Alicante building.

Roommates Kayla Jordan, 19, and Lisa Rodarmel, 21, live off campus, but came to the university after the stabbing to pick up Rodarmel's girlfriend, who lives in one of the other buildings in Sauvignon Village.

Displaced students were offered lodging at area hotels but all declined, opting to stay with friends and family instead.

University officials say in a statement counselors are available to those students affected and that arrangements will be made if they can't take their final exams or submit their final assignments.

The murder was the first in the school's 57-year history.
