Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on Monday ordered the release of 935 prisoners ahead of the upcoming holy fasting month of Ramadan, UAE state news agency WAM reported.

"Following the advice of the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), the President-General enjoins the Nigerian Muslim Ummah to search for the crescent of Ramadan 1439 AH immediately after sunset on Wednesday 16th May, 2018 equivalent to 29th Sha'aban 1439 AH".

In his message on the occasion of the start of the holy month, Trump said, "In this spirit of thanksgiving and reflection, those observing Ramadan can strengthen our communities, help those in need, and serve as good examples for how to live a holy life". It will commence when the new crescent moon is spotted, which will be either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Oman was the first country in the Gulf to announce when it will mark the beginning of Ramadan. Otherwise the holy month will begin on Thursday, May 17.

As the calendar is lunar, the dates for when each month begins move every year; in 2017 Ramadan began. After sunset the fast is broken with an evening meal called 'Iftar', often starting with few sips of water and handful of candies or dates.
