More than 11 hours after a woman climbed a tree and prompted a standoff with emergency responders at Lanark Recreation Center in Canoga Park, she came down safely Tuesday morning and was being evaluated by paramedics.

The apparently homeless woman was first reported up the tree, which is in the 21800 block of West Lanark Street, at about 7 p.m. Monday. At one point they brought her food, which she refused. The station also said she tore up a blanket the firefighters gave her, cursed at rescue personnel and decorated herself with ornaments.

It's unclear why she went up the tree and is refusing to come down. Police officials said the woman was not technically breaking any laws and could not be forced down from the tree.

Scott said the woman was uncooperative, but had not seemed to be "mentally altered".

Firefighters set up an air bag at the bottom of the tree, Los Angeles Police Department officers were notified.

Two firefighters with ladders managed to build a rapport with the woman and finally convinced her to come down shortly before 7 a.m. Tuesday. The woman reportedly was being referred for a mental evaluation.
