An eight-year-old girl from Kingsford, East Sydney, was allegedly assaulted in her home in Barker street in the early hours of Monday morning by a man who climbed through her bedroom window.

Two minutes later, he can be seen climbing back out, carefully closing the window behind him before fleeing.

Superintendent Karen McCarthy said: 'We are asking any member of the community who has seen anything suspicious to come forward'. She was not physically injured in the incident.

"The man spoke to the girl briefly before indecently assaulting her and leaving through the same window", NSW police said in a statement. "The welfare of our young victim and family is of paramount importance".

"This is a very rare but obviously a very serious matter", she said. Detectives from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command are now appealing for more information about the incident.

The man is described as being between 170 and 180 centimetres tall, was wearing a hooded jacket, cargo trousers, a hat and was last seen running down Barker street towards McDonalds.

Police are urging anyone with information or that recognises the man in the vision to contact them immediately.
