It is always hard to gauge how successful an assistant manager can become when transitioning into the top job, added responsibilities like media duties require temperament that may otherwise have been untested.

Mourinho has decided he can not adequately replace his right-hand man of the past 17 years and will instead redesign his staff with no official deputy.

"If that moment arrives, I will be a very proud guy because this man came to me when he was a kid 17 years ago".

Michael Carrick says he's happy to give Jose Mourinho his opinion on Manchester United transfer targets this summer as the Red Devils gear up for a crucial transfer window.

"I will organise my coaching staff in a way where the assistant manager figure doesn't exist", Mourinho said.

"When he has his badges, when he has his pro licence, when he makes the bridge from player to assistant". It is an unbelievable opportunity.

"I look forward to learning off him", said the United captain.

It was the best season that the Old Trafford Faithful have enjoyed since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, securing a second place finish with 81 points, ironically more points than they secured in their treble winning season in 1999.

"I'm going to have coaches, assistant coaches, fitness coaches and a structure where they have specialists in different areas connected to performance".

"I have a lot of memories to cherish, some I'll never forget, especially of this place. I've been at this club, and it is such a great club, so I obviously know the club and the manager", he said.

Meanwhile, Manchester United now turn their attention to their last clash of the campaign, where they will meet Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium next weekend.

Mourinho made nine changes to the side which beat the Hornets thanks to a Marcus Rashford tap-in made by Carrick's long pass and laid on by Juan Mata's selflessness. "He had treatment at the training ground and stayed away".

Watford: Gomes, Janmaat, Cathcart, Kabasele (Mariappa, 20 mins), Holebas, Doucouré, Hughes, Deulofeu (Deeney, 63 mins), Pereyra, Richarlison, Gray (Chalobah, 72 mins).
