The Dallas Police Department said Flores-Pavon was murdered. Dallas police were called to an area near Merriman Parkway on Saturday evening after reports of a body floating at White Rock Creek were called in, according to a news release. Few details are known about the circumstances of the victim's death; the Dallas Police Department is investigating. She was discovered unconscious and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators have ruled the death unexplained pending further tests from the medical examiner's office. Police urged anyone with information about the woman's identity to contact authorities.

Police say there's no connection between the two incidents, the Star-Telegram reported on Wednesday. But still, McMurray said, the deaths of two trans women in Dallas just days apart is a reminder of the systemic factors making life more hard - and more risky - for trans people every day. "We don't want to live our lives in fear, but I think we are very aware of things like this that potentially can happen and we certainly are a target".

A vigil was held for Flores-Pavon on Sunday at Dallas' Cathedral of Hope.

Monica Roberts, a board member of local charity Black Transwomen Inc., regretted the case hadn't been handled as such. Dallas transgender advocate Leslie McMurray tells Dallas radio station KRLD that though she believes Dallas to be a secure place for transgender individuals, any demise amongst them makes them really feel weak.

"As people are educated about the issues of transgender folks, either on the transfeminine or transmasculine spectrum", Roberts said, "acceptance follows along".
