Australian Alexander Downer spoke to FBI about Russia

Alexander Downer, who was previously Australia's longest-serving foreign minister, had a boozy discussion with a key Donald Trump confidante, George Papadopoulos, in May 2016.

In December a year ago it was reported that former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos told Australian diplomat Alexander Downer that Russian Federation had political dirt on Hillary Clinton.

"At least one" USA government informant met with Trump campaign officials in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

The case, named after a Rolling Stones lyric, was used by only the small group of inside agents, who had interviewed the Australian ambassador to the United Kingdom, who had evidence of possible collusion between Russian Federation and a Trump adviser.

Donald Trump's relations with Australia were tested when he took office past year over a refugee swap deal and the FBI's investigation into his 2016 campaign has the potential to cause a new diplomatic rift.

Levin referred to a report at the New York Times earlier that day which outlines the origins of the FBI's secretive probe into what it suspected were the Trump campaign's dealings with the Kremlin.

When leaked Democratic Party emails began appearing in public two months later it is alleged Australian officials passed on the Alexander Downer intelligence to American counterparts, helping to trigger the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into Russian interference in the U.S. election. "Days after they closed their investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, agents began scrutinizing the campaign of her Republican rival", writes the Times.

"Crossfire Hurricane", a reference to a Rolling Stones lyrics, continued in secret as Trump publicly railed against the investigation, calling it a "witch hunt". And at least one government informant met several times with Mr. Page and Mr. Papadopoulos, current and former officials said.

He is co-operating with Mueller's investigation.

Hillary Clinton, who won the popular vote in the presidential election only to lose the electoral college count, this year used a series of media interviews with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation to accuse the Trump campaign of colluding with Russian Federation to discredit her in key swing states with false news stories on Facebook.
