Fraser River evacuation alert

Staff members are monitoring the rising river, patrolling dikes and using sandbags where needed, Metro Vancouver said.

The evacuation alert is a precautionary measure - Barnston Island residents are not required to leave at this time, but are advised to prepare for the possibility of an evacuation order.

Another update from the BC River Forecast Centre is due Wednesday afternoon.

Gather essential items, such as medications, eyeglasses, valuable documents, immediate care needs and pets, and be prepared to leave quickly.

The Township of Langley issued an evacuation alert on Tuesday for unprotected flood plains.

However, those living along the river banks are advised that the province expects the Fraser to peak at 6.6 metres at the Mission gauge next week, and further alerts and orders are possible in the coming days.

Further east, a formal evacuation order was issued for a handful of properties in Chilliwack as the river surged Tuesday.


Residents of three properties at Carey Point have been ordered out of their homes because of flooding. Officials did not know Wednesday whether any homes had been damaged.

"We're now assisting the Katzie First Nation Reserve on the island with sandbagging and we've got additional sandbags available for the residents and they can come and pick them up at a location on the island".

Elsewhere in B.C., residents in many communities are bracing for more flooding as the warm weather and rapid snow melt continue.

Evacuation alerts have been extended to more areas of the Fraser Valley as the Fraser River joins other B.C. waterways nearing or at flood stage.

Officials are keeping a close eye on the level of the Fraser River along its length from Prince George southward and the River Forecast Centre says there is the potential for flooding this weekend in the Prince George and Quesnel areas.

The town of Princeton has issued an evacuation alert for some properties along the Similkameen and Tulameen rivers.
