JA Happ a hometown hero as Blue Jays thump Mets 12-1

Basically, J.A. Happ did everything at soggy Citi Field on Wednesday afternoon except wash the dishes in the clubhouse kitchen.

Viewed through that lens, the Blue Jays got far more Dickey than they did from Cone, while Kent did far more in his career than Syndergaard has, at least so far. Clippard is actually tied for the team lead with four wins and 1.23 ERA.

Mets: New York gets Thursday off before beginning a stretch of 18 games in 17 days. "It was fun being on the bases a little bit and scoring a couple runs and pitching deep into the ballgame". He is the first Toronto pitcher to ever reach base three times in a single game. The Mets' only baserunners were Luis Guillorme, who bounced an infield single up the middle in the second, and Wilmer Flores, who doubled to left-center in the fourth.

Jacob deGrom (3-0, 1.83 ERA, 56 Ks, 1.04 WHIP) opens the set for NY coming off a 45-pitch, one-inning start in his return from the disabled list.

"He was outstanding on a tough day to play", Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "Yeah, he held it together". He probably had the best slider he's had all year. And our bats came to life.

"We needed it", manager Mickey Callaway said. "Felt like glimpses of the old Noah was coming out, and then after that I lost the ability to throw front-hip sinkers to lefties and backdoor to righties", Syndergaard said. The right-hander made one previous start against the Blue Jays, striking out 11 over six innings of two-hit ball in a no-decision during his 2015 rookie season.

"I think getting ahead was the biggest (difference)", he said. The team has a slash-line of.267/.330/.419 over its last five matchups and is 2-3 SU during that stretch.

Wheeler was sharp for the first three innings, but was never the same following an 18-minute delay in the third, as the grounds crew spread dirt on the soaked field in a downpour. The Blue Jays are second in the AL in strikeouts which could be a formula for success Tuesday night. Wheeler allowed seven hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.

He gave up 10 hits and seven earned runs over only 3.1 innings and took the loss in a 9-3 loss to the Mariners. He also had two hits. Richard Urena hit a three-run homer in the eighth off Buddy Baumann, who was making his Mets debut. Toronto recorded 15 hits in total.

Brandon Nimmo's homer with two outs in the ninth produced the Mets' only run. However, a nice reaching grab from Bruce got him out of the inning. Josh Donaldson, Smoak and Hernandez combined for eight RBIs, five hits and five runs. Happ led off the inning by walking.

Curtis Granderson his a pair of doubles and walked against his former team. He ran into some trouble with one out in the fifth as Donaldson doubled and Smoak drew a walk.

The win was a huge load lifted off the shoulders of Gibbons, who did not want to see his club dip below the.500 level with a loss on Wednesday.

The Mets were shut out seven times last season.

The New York Mets defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 12-2 behind eleven unanswered runs on Tuesday night at Citi Field. In Tuesday's 12-2 loss to the Mets, Gibbons said he nearly put DH Kendrys Morales on the mound. Martin became the seventh Toronto shortstop this season.

The Blue Jays offense has slashed.231/.312/.415 on its way to 4.8 runs scored per game in 2018, including 2.7 runs per game over the team's last 10 games and 3.0 per game over the team's last five outings (1-4 SU).
