New advisory confirms that eating fish is good for the heart

Now, the American Heart Association has just released a new advisory that continues to recommend eating fish twice a week, as it could help reduce the risk of stroke, heart failure coronary heart disease, and cardiac arrest. Thats more than Americans typically eat: In 2012, the average seafood intake was 1.3 servings per week – slightly up from 1.1 servings a week in 1999. "Especially when it replaces less healthy foods such as meats that are high in artery-clogging saturated fat".

A panel of nutrition experts reviewed studies about mercury in fish and agreed that mercury contamination may be linked to neurological problems in newborns.

“More vegetarians are adding fish to their diets, and the research shows there might be benefit to that, ” she said.

According to the statement recently published by the American Heart Association (AHA), fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout, sardines or albacore tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

The key is eating several types of fish, and eating them regularly, said Rimm.

The benefits of eating fish substantially outweigh any risks associated with mercury contamination, especially if a variety of seafood is consumed, the researchers said. These fats are crucial to brain development in babies starting with growth in the womb and continuing through childhood. Existing logical research finds that mercury contamination does not effectively affect heart disease risk in adults, and the advantages of eating fish considerably exceed any dangers related with mercury defilement, particularly if an assortment of fish is expended. There are many other benefits from eating oily fish, as it's known to significantly lower inflammation, so it's good for the eyes, brain, people with arthritis or dementia.

The advisory also noted that as fish farming grows around the world, production should be closely watched to make sure farms are environmentally friendly and that farmed fish contain omega-3 levels similar to those in wild fish.
