The Senate yesterday pleaded with the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) to call off the strike it embarked upon over three weeks ago, which has affected the health sector across the country.

"We believe that it is high time that the Federal Ministry of Health, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and relevant stakeholders should mediate and end the inter-rivalry among various health professionals in the country".

According to a press statement issued by the ministry of health on Tuesday, Isaac Adewole, the health minister, gave the directive after his attention was drawn to a press briefing by the President of National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Ugochukwu Chinaka, who accused members of the Joint Health Sector Union JOHESU of harassing and molesting members of NARD and other medical officers at their respective duty posts.

"Negotiations are still on with JOHESU and the Minister of Labour is leading the negotiation, and we expect that we will conclude on all issues very soon".

The Federal Government has warned the umbrella body of medical doctors, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), to desist from taking interest in what does not concern it, particularly the strike by healthcare workers.

The minister accused the leadership of NMA of delaying the peace process between the unions and the federal government.

Raising the alarm in Asaba, JOHESU members warned of the potential for deaths in the hospital if management continues to engage the services of interns and corps members in place of experienced health workers. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who visited General Hospital in Bayara town and the Specialists' Hospital, Bauchi Metropolis on Monday, reports that health workers had deserted the hospitals. "Please take this as a notice, sir".

"This goes a long way to show that there was dishonesty, insincerity from the beginning on the part of the ministry (federal ministry of health) because most probably the minister is a doctor; minister of state (health) is a doctor and minister of labour who is supposed to be the chief negotiator, is also a medical doctor", he said.
