The 27-year-old braved the disgusting conditions to take the flat stage, beating off competition from Danny van Poppel and Niccolo Bonifazio.

Bora-Hansgrohe's Sam Bennett won stage 12 of the Giro d'Italia with a powerful sprint to the line in Imola, Italy, today.

Bennett opened up his sprint a long way out to storm past Matej Mohoric and Carlos Betancur and claim his second victory of this Giro, at the end of the 214-kilometer route from Osimo to the motorsport race circuit of Imola. "We still had two guys in front - I didn't know how much energy they had left but I didn't want another stage getting away from me", said Bennett.

"So I made a decision to go early, I didn't know if I could hold it or not". Deciding that he would "go early" in his chase of the leading pair, the Belgian-born cyclist raised in Carrick-on-suir admitted that he "didn't know whether he could hold it or not". It worked to my advantage. I just had to do my sprint.

Yates retains the overall lead with a gap of 47 seconds, while Bennett remains second to Viviani in the points classification. While not finishing on the podium, the British cyclist had another good day yesterday.

The stage was meant to be a relatively easy one before the race hits the mountains this weekend.

The early five-man breakaway with riders from three Italian teams - Marco Frapporti, Jacopo Mosca, Eugert Zhupa, Mirco Maestri and Manuel Senni - were also caught by the peloton 20km from the line. Tim Wellens attacked with just over 20 kilometers remaining and built a gap af 23 seconds but he was caught, too.

A string of attacks followed from BMC Racing Team's Rohan Dennis, Bennett and UAE Team Emirates' Diego Ulissi. "I think it's a nicer win than the first one".

Mohoric bridged the gap to the leaders shortly after and they dropped Ulissi but had a gap of just four seconds heading into the race circuit for the second and final time.
