The Czech exchanged a brief word with Sakkari at the net before approaching Mrozinska with an outstretched hand before withdrawing it and repeatedly smashing the chair with her racquet.

Top seed Simona Halep showed no mercy dispatching Japan's Naomi Osaka in straight sets to reach the third round of the WTA Italian Open in Rome on Wednesday.

Halep, a beaten finalist last year, was handed a tough second-round draw against Osaka, who defeated the top seed on her way to victory at Indian Wells earlier this year and saw off Victoria Azarenka in her opening match.

"In Melbourne, I played against [Osaka], and it was also a very good match for me", Halep said to the media, after the match.

"She knew it and we were having a lot of backhand rallies, other than that I couldn't say what happened."I feel like I've played her the most of any player, this was the third time this year".

Osaka attempted to fight her way back in after falling 2-0 down in the second, but Halep twice saved break points and swiftly sealed victory.

World number two Caroline Wozniacki began her campaign with a comfortable 6-1 6-4 victory over Belgian Alison van Uytvanck.

Osaka, 20, failed to convert any of her six break point opportunities, hitting 29 unforced errors to Halep's 14.The 26-year-old Halep reached the final in Rome last year and needs to reach the quarter-finals this time to hold her world No 1 ranking.

The 31-year-old Russian will next face Australia's Daria Gavrilova for a place in the quarter-finals.
