Sorry, Lando Isn't Getting His Own Star Wars Movie Just Yet

"We would love to tell a story about Lando Calrissian one day, but it's not relevant, it would be fun to tell the story of Han and Chewie".

Written by Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon, Solo: A Star Wars Story also stars Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Joonas Suotamo, Paul Bettany and Ian Kenny.

UPDATE (11:40 a.m. ET): Lucasfilm has issued a statement clarifying that something was lost in translation, and that Kathleen Kennedy told the French magazine a Lando spinoff is "something she'd like to do one day in the future".

Solo isn't even out, and already, people want more of Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. We know Lucasfilm was working on a Boba Fett movie at one point, and rumors of that project have never entirely gone away. If Lucasfilm is ready to say that a Lando movie is on the way when it's not ready to commit to any direct sequels to Solo, then it would seem that the studio feels the same way.

Beyond that, in case you haven't noticed, movies with black actors and actresses in the lead have been doing phenomenally well at the box office. It's possible, but I don't see it coming out anytime soon. The decision to explore Lando's story is the right one, and not a surprising one.

Looking at the bevy of early reviews, most critics agree that Donald Glover is a major standout in Solo.

So what sort of schedule can we expect if Lando is suddenly next in the pipeline? Pretty sure Glover won't be too hurt. This movie has Han Solo and Chewbacca and Qi'ra and all sort of other characters in it, but it's really Lando's film. Next year, we'll get Episode IX, then maybe an Obi-Wan solo movie after that.

But if Glover did get his own Star Wars movie, would anyone be surprised?
