At least 18 people were killed and several injured after a portion a portion of the under-construction flyover being built by a state-run corporation collapsed on a busy road in Varanasi on Tuesday.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Corporation has made a decision to examine all bridges and flyovers which are under construction. "But it is we who have been alerting them about the potential problem and they have not acted".

The FIR, filed on Wednesday, does not name anyone but lists officials in supervisory positions and contractors to whom jobs were outsourced.

After the collapse, police Wednesday booked officials of the UPSBC for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, attempt to commit culpable homicide and sections of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Rajan Mittal, MD UPBC is blaming the Varanasi district administration officials for the tragedy.

Authorities said no work was going on when the concrete slab crashed. District Magistrate Yogeshwar Ram Mishra said that the UPBSC was guilty and had never written to him rather it was the other way round and the state bridge corporation didn't take any action regarding the traffic safety regulations. Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya announced the setting up of a Setu Suraksha Cell to prevent such incidents. In 2016, a long stretch of elevated road being built through the city of Calcutta collapsed, killing 26 people and leaving 11 injured.

"Local officers also wrote about four-five letters in the past to remove street vendors from the construction site but nothing happened".

According to DIG (law and order) Praveen Kumar Tripathi, all these allied aspects like diversion of route and maintaining security norms are the responsibility of the organisation which executes work there. However, the district police maintain that they have not been told about the route diversion. "But they did not and that is why the FIR has been registered against them".

The committee has already inspected the site and collected the samples which have been sent to IIT Roorkee, for investigation.
