In the heavy Pakistan shelling in R.S. Pura and Arnia sectors, five civilians have been injured and evacuated to hospitals by police in bullet proof vehicles, a police officer said.

The slain personnel was identified as 28-year-old constable Sitaram Upadhyay. The rangers had fired at some dozen BSF border outposts. In total, six persons, including a BSF officer, were injured in the firing.

Just a day before the scheduled visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jammu & Kashmir, a BSF constable and a couple were among three people killed, as Pakistani Rangers continued targeting forward Indian posts and civilian areas with mortar shells and small arms fire along the global border on Friday.

The Pakistani rangers resorted to firing on the IB in Samba and Hiranagar sectors, BSF sources said.

In the exchange of fire, a BSF jawan suffered injuries and has been hospitalised.

The firing and mortar shelling along the IB in Samba district started around 2 a.m., while it started at around 10 p.m. on Wednesday night in Kathua's Hiranagar sector, a senior BSF officer told PTI.

He is survived by a 3-year-old daughter and one-year-old son.

The incidents of unprovoked firing and attempts to infiltrate the IB have increased in the last few days, and comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to a farm university in RSPura on Saturday.

Border shelling and firing have also been reported from Narayanpur, Chamblyal, and SM Pora regions in Samba sector along the IB in Jammu.

Four civilians lost their lives in separate incidents of ceasefire violation in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

Authorities have activated safe shelters and other facilities and have alerted police for evacuation in case of escalation in the exchanges of shelling and firing.

However, there was a lull in the shelling in Kathua and Samba districts.

A BSF jawan was killed along the Jammu border area earlier this week while he was thwarting an infiltration bid. Troops have also foiled four infiltration bids along the worldwide border since May 12.
