Input any given name to see its popularity. However, numerous 2017 top names are making a first appearance on the list.

The Social Security Administration released the list Thursday, highlighting this year's crop and the popularity of names throughout the decades. Parents supply their baby's name to the agency upon applying for the child's social security card. What's in a name? Trailing Olivia on the state girls' list were Emma, Sophia, Mia and Ava. All five were in the Top 10 for OR for 2015 as well. In the USA, the top three names for girls remain unchanged from past year, Emma is the most popular, followed by Olivia and Ava.

For boys the top name in OR was Oliver, also lingering in the Top 10 for several years. William takes the top boy slot followed by Elijah, Noah, Liam and James.

For boys the nation's three most popular names were Liam, Noah and William.

The SSA first began compiling the baby name list in 1997; moreover, the agency claims that names date back to 1880.

As was the case with the nation as a whole, Sophia and Sofia combined would have far outstripped Emma in California: There were 2,726 new Emmas in the state previous year, but more than 4,000 babies named Sophia or Sofia. There were only 47 of those in OR previous year (but 229 Olivers). And search for a specific name, using the red search bar in the far right corner. In 2012 there were Hadleys born in OR, making that the No. 88 in the state; in 2017 she didn't even make the Top 100.
