"The Arsenal-appoint-Unai-Emery-new-manager.html" Daily MailArsenal-appoint-Unai-Emery-new-manager.html" says a contract for the Spanish former boss of Sevilla, Paris Saint-Germain and Spartak Moscow was being thrashed out on Monday night by Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

Arteta had always been in the frame and is understood to have wanted assurances over the role he will play in Arsenal's transfer policy before agreeing to join the club as new head coach.

The 46-year-old Spaniard is available after leaving Paris St-Germain where he won one Ligue 1 title and four domestic cups in two seasons in charge.

Manchester City first-team coach Mikel Arteta had been a front-runner to replace Wenger, with City boss Pep Guardiola giving the former Arsenal captain his blessing to pursue a career in management at the Emirates.

Emery, who made his name during his three-year stint in charge of Sevilla, was at one stage a 66/1 shot and behind Tim Sherwood in the betting odds to become Arsenal manager.

Emery, who joined PSG in June 2016, left the French club at the end of this season, after leading them to a domestic treble in France.

An announcement and news conference are expected later this week. Thierry Henry has also been interviewed for the job.

His time at PSG, where he won the French title this season, had been less successful, with the club's Qatari owners choosing to replace him with former Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel after two disappointing campaigns in the Champions League. Emery's English was believed to be a major obstacle but Arsenal insist he can speak the language.

I wouldn't be disgruntled as an Arsenal fan about Unai Emery, I think the fact he's come out of left field when everyone's thinking "it's going to be Arteta", that's the only problem.
