Relegated Stoke have returned for Rowett, their No 1 target in January after the dismissal of Mark Hughes, and are hoping to agree a deal in the next 48 hours as they prepare for the Championship.

The Potters parted ways with Paul Lambert following relegation from the Premier League and are looking for Rowett to secure an instant return to the top flight.

Derby boss Gary Rowett has asked his club for permission to speak to Stoke regarding the managerial vacancy at the Bet365 Stadium.

Stoke have approached Derby for permission to speak to their manager Gary Rowett, according to Sky sources.

Rowett has been in charge of the Rams since early 2017 after prior spells as boss at Burton and Birmingham.

"The club is now in discussion with Stoke regarding the matter and will update our supporters in due course".

But while the Stoke job would no doubt be tempting for Rowett, we think he'll be keen to conjure up another promotion push with current club Derby.

Derby owner Mel Morris has already indicated that the club will not be able to spend big in the summer transfer market and will be making cuts across the board.

The 43-year-old is highly rated in the game, having led Derby to the playoffs this past season.
