Earlier this month at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting in Dallas, Abbott himself said, "The problem is not guns".

The discussions will start in Austin, and Abbott says they will include lawmakers, educators, students, parents, gun-rights advocates and shooting survivors. Chicago Public School CEO Dr. Janice Jackson said she supports demonstrations of this kind as long as students are not put in danger. He said his son was bullied and said, "I believe that's what was behind the shooting". "And that solution is limiting access to weapons", Harden said. The sheriff says the officer who was suppressing the shooter gave responding officers time to evacuate students, and get the suspect in custody.

He was wearing a green T-shirt with gold lettering —the Santa Fe High School colors— printed Saturday night by the wife of the church's youth pastor. She said teachers should be armed.

He said he had not planned anything special to say to the some 150 people who normally attend. "If something like this happened again, our teachers would be ready".

Dimitrios Pagourtzis is being held on capital murder charges.

"A week later he opens fire on everyone he didn't like", she said.

Monica Bracknell, an 18-year-old senior who survived the shooting, told the governor Sunday morning that she doesn't think the shooting should be turned into a political battle over gun control. According to Rodriguez, Fisher stood up to him a week before and allegedly embarrassed him in front of the class. Rodriguez said that humiliation caused Fisher to be the first person the shooter killed.

In a phone interview over the weekend with Greece's Antenna TV, Antonios Pagourtzis said he wished he could have stopped the killing Friday at Santa Fe High School. He told them about how they will grieve their slain schoolmates and cope with those emotions and others while trying to recover from the shooting.

Texas Lt. Gov Dan Patrick, a Republican and prominent gun proponent in the state, has pointed to numerous issues that he sees lurking behind last week's shooting. Since 2013, Texas has reduced the cost and hours of training needed to be licensed to carry a handgun, allowed "open carry" for handgun license holders, and allowed concealed handguns in college classrooms and dorms. On Monday, Abbott's re-election campaign scaled back its shotgun raffle in the wake of the Santa Fe shooting, replacing it with a raffle for a $250 gift certificate. A photograph of the governor aiming a shotgun was removed. "Shana said that if he came into the school with a gun and killed her, she would haunt him for the rest of his life".

"We can't do gun violence prevention without being optimistic".

But, while it's a common occurrence, few young people actually report the abuse they experience; and when they do, adults - including school staff - often fail to help. I've worn a gun over 40 years.
