Anti-Sterlite protest video shows cop saying 'at least 1 should die'

Most people stayed indoors as the district administration announced that prohibitory orders banning the assembly of five or more people that were imposed on Monday evening would remain in force till May 25.

The Sterlite Protest demanding the closure of the controversial Thoothukudi copper smelting plant entered its 101 day today.

The Thootukudi copper smelter, one of India's biggest, is run by Indian subsidiary Vedanta Ltd's Sterlite Copper unit. Locals have alleged that the Sterlite copper plant is responsible for increasing pollution and have been demanding its closure. "The government should pack up and go", NDTV quoted DMK leader Sarvanan as saying. Negligence of the Governments is the reason for all the unfortunate incidents.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday termed the death of protesters a "brutal example of state sponsored terrorism". "My thoughts and prayers are with the families of these martyrs and the injured", he tweeted.

Actor-turned-politician and Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan on Wednesday visited General Hospital in Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) to meet the protesters injured in the police firing. As the violence spiralled, police opened fire, killing nine people.
