The Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, on Monday said DR Congo players would be screened for Ebola on arrival in the country ahead of their friendly match against the Super Eagles in Port Harcourt on Monday.

More than 7,500 doses of the rVSV-ZEBOV - which is still unlicensed - are now available in the country and 8,000 additional doses will be available soon, according to WHO.

The risk of speard of the virus is high at national and regional levels due in part to the proximity of the epidemic focus to the Congo River which links with the capitals of the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic.

Abuja - Despite repeated calls for the cancellation of worldwide friendly match between Super Eagles of Nigeria and DR Congo on May 28 in preparation for the 2018 World Cup, the federal government has insisted that the match would not be called off following the festering outbreak of Ebola virus in the country.

Experts say the VSV-EBOV vaccine will stop the virus from spreading in future outbreaks. "This is an important moment that changes the way we've seen Ebola for 40 years".

At least 46 suspected, probable, and confirmed cases of the virus have been identified in the region, the article reported.

Congo began on Monday a vaccination campaign Bikoro to stem the outbreak that has already spread from rural towns into a city of more than 1 million people.

Speaking on how much difference the vaccine will make towards improving the situation, the WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said, "Vaccination will be key to controlling this outbreak".

"Basically making a ring around a person who has tested positive and then making a second ring - so contacts of contacts", World Health Organization spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic, who was vaccinated himself as part of the drug's trial run, explained to NPR's Don Gonyea on Sunday. Immunized health workers from the Guinea trial will also be flown in to lend their expertise. For every case, up to 150 contacts will be offered the vaccine.

"With an Ebola outbreak now occurring in the Democratic Republic of Congo, it is all the more essential that World Health Organization focuses on its most important mandate", Azar said Tuesday.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has deployed 25 epidemiologists to Mbandaka and Bikoro to support the government's surveillance work, its director John Nkengasong told a news briefing in Geneva.

The vaccine takes seven to 10 days to generate a strong enough immune response to ensure a person is fully protected.

When the government closed schools around the country to protect against the spread of infection, H.I. volunteers and workers went door to door to homes with children with disabilities and educated them on the importance of hygiene and provided washing materials.
