Westwood is a seven-time victor as a player in the contest against the US. Westwood, however, is coming off one of his most disappointing Ryder Cups, having finished 0-3 at Hazeline in 2016.

'You only need to look at the record books to see that their Ryder Cup pedigree speaks for itself.

Since making his debut in 1997, Westwood has played in the last ten contests, one short of Nick Faldo's record, and was on the winning side seven times, compiling a total of 23 points bettered only by Faldo (25), Bernhard Langer (24) and Colin Montgomerie (23 ½).

Harrington: "We all know that the captain, the teams are so well balanced nowadays that the captain can make all the difference, and he needs all the support he can get, and there is a lot going on during the week".

Harrington said: "I am delighted to have been asked to be part of Thomas' team of Vice Captains".

While many people would have expected Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell to try and earn their spots on the team, any hope of them teeing off appear to be over after Bjorn named the Irish duo, along with Lee Westwood and Luke Donald in his management team.

"My four Ryder Cup appearances have been the greatest experiences so far of my career", McDowell said.

"I'm excited to take on a slightly different view of things and help the 12 players be as ready as they can to regain this trophy", added McDowell, who hasn't yet ruled out earning a place on the team as a player and has won the French Open twice at this year's venue.

McDowell is a two-time victor of the French Open at Le Golf National, site of the Ryder Cup. "We know what we are up against", Bjorn said. The 45-year-old Englishman made his 10 Ryder Cup appearance in Europe's losing effort at Hazeltine.

"It's the best place you can be as any sportsman". The idea of playing for a team in a sport which is inherently individual is something special and it is the reason players love The Ryder Cup so much. "Of course, my ideal scenario is that I hit a hot streak of form over the summer and force my way in to the team".

The 42nd Ryder Cup is September 28-30 at Le Golf National located just outside of Paris, France.

Westwood, McDowell and Harrington are all playing in the BMW PGA Championship which starts at Wentworth on Thursday traditionally when the chase for spots on the team begins in earnest.

Bjorn said the primary quality of any vice-captain is to 'check your ego at the locker room door, ' and both certainly did a good job of that when officially unveiled on Tuesday, given they're two of the youngest deputies in Ryder Cup history.
