Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday spoke to JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy and congratulated him for taking oath as Karnataka Chief Minister.

Addressing his maiden press conference after becoming Chief Minister, he said that all most all non-BJP party leaders had arrived and witnessed the swearing in ceremony.

The ceremony, which was attended by a battery of political dignitaries, including United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, was nothing short of show of unity of the opposition parties, one year ahead of general elections.

Governor Vajubhai Vala, however, swore-in BJP's BS Yeddyurappa to form the government as the leader of the single largest party in the 224-member Assembly, whose effective strength is 221.

G Paramweshwara, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief, took the oath of office of the deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka.

As Kumaraswamy begins his second innings as chief minister, experts are already talking about the fault lines between the coalition partners - JD (S) and Congress.

After the hung Assembly in the 2004 elections, the Congress and JD-S chose to come together and form a government under the Congress leader Dharam Singh.

The JD (S) won 37 seats in Karnataka elections to Congress's 78 and the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) 104.

On May 18, the Supreme Court, on the plea of the Congress and the JD (S), shifted the floor test to May 19. He took up film-making and distribution and produced several successful Kannada films, including the recently released "Jaguar", starring his son Nikhil Gowda.

He got elected to the assembly for the first time in 2004, when the JD (S) joined the coalition government headed by Congress's Dharm Singh after the elections threw up a hung House.

Kumaraswamy became the chief minister for half the term.
