Apple to offer credit for battery replacements

The company hasn't commented on the newly discovered documents, but it's unlikely that customers will be too happy to know that Apple knew the devices were more likely to bend and sold them for 18 months anyway. Later, Apple introduced a battery replacement service for users across the world. If you'll recall, phones with the touch disease develop a flickering gray bar at the top of the screen, and their touch function would only work every once in a while or would stop working altogether.

Apple, which admitted a year ago that it slowed down older iPhones to keep them from unexpected shutdowns because of battery issues, in late December announced it was offering a discount on replacing batteries in out-of-warranty phones.

Apple claimed at the time its batteries should retain up to 80 per cent of their original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles - in other words, after using all of the battery's power 500 times.

The documents remain under seal, but US District Court judge Lucy Koh made some of the information from them public in a recent opinion in the case. "It's absolutely a problem in the design". "Really all you can do is avoid any activity that would cause the phone to flex. Actually, don't put it in any pocket". However, in November 2016, Apple announced it would replace touch-diseased phones for $149; rather than the previous charge of $349. Internally, however, the company's engineers saw the malleability of the aluminum to be a big enough problem to warrant adding more epoxy around the touchscreen chip to fasten it more solidly to the circuit board. This was used in the iPhone 5s but the company only started applying the solution to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in May 2016.
