"The blue background of the shield represents the Pacific Ocean off the California coast, while the two golden rays across the shield are symbolic of the sunshine of The Duchess's home state".

The three quills represent communication and the power of words, which has always been important to Meghan.

The golden poppies on the grass under the shield are also meant as a nod to California.

Kensington Palace tweeted an image of the Duchess of Sussex's new coat of arms this morning, and we're loving all the symbolism and shout-outs to Markle's birthplace.

There's a songbird on one side that represents the duchess, while the lion represents Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex.

"The Duchess worked closely with the College of Arms to create a Coat of Arms that was both personal and representative", the palace announced on Instagram.

Meghan has been vocal in her beliefs in the past speaking at the U.N. Women's conference in 2015, as a keen advocate for women.

Meghan, who is now officially the Duchess of Sussex, joined Britain's royal family when she Wednesday Harry at Queen Elizabeth's Windsor Castle home last Saturday.

Traditionally wives of members of the Royal Family have two - one of their husband's supporters on the shield and one relating to themselves. Her Coronet features two crosses patée, four fleurs-de-lys and two strawberry leaves.

"Good heraldic design is almost always simple and the Arms of The Duchess of Sussex stand well beside the historic beauty of the quartered British Royal Arms", Woodcock said.

Princess Diana was honoured a coat of arms ahead of her wedding to Prince Charles in 1981.

In 2011 a coat of arms was designed for the family of the Duchess of Cambridge - then Kate Middleton - which featured white chevronels symbolising mountains representing the family's love of the Lake District and skiing.

The decision to grant the Duchess a coat of arms in her own right follows a model set by the Duchess of Gloucester when she married into the Royal Family in 1972 after being born in Denmark. People said the design will likely be unveiled in a couple years.
