If you find yourself in this situation, "don't panic, and stop your vehicle as you normally would", said Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports director of auto testing. "If you're on the highway, pull the vehicle over onto the shoulder".

Owners of the recalled vehicles should avoid cruise control and take their vehicle to the dealership for a free software update that corrects the issue.

Fiat Chrysler said drivers could still stop their auto by continuously putting on the brakes or by shifting into neutral gear and braking.

You may still hear the engine revving, but as long as you keep the brakes on, the vehicle should stop. At that point, shift the vehicle into park.

Fiat Chrysler said vehicles may be placed in park mode once stopped, at which point cruise-control is canceled.

The flaw was initially discovered after Fiat Chrysler, which is also known as FCA, tested the vehicles' computer network. "It was still running at an engine speed to support 70 miles per hour and fighting the brakes", the driver wrote.

The recall involves a group of gasoline-powered vehicles with automatic transmissions from various model years built from 2014 through the 2019 model year.

The company said it is recalling an unspecified number of additional vehicles in Canada, Mexico and other markets, and recalling some Fiat Fremont vehicles built on the same platform of the Dodge Journey.

It was separately fined $70 million by USA regulators in 2015 for failing to report vehicle crash deaths and injuries since 2003.

Affected models include the 2014-2019 Ram 1500 pickup, as well as the 2014-2018 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 pickups and chassis cab trucks.

Fiat Chrysler said that at times its cruise control systems automatically start accelerating to help cars keep at the same speed, such as when going up a hill.

After news of the recall, Fiat Chrysler shares fell almost 2 percent in midday trading to $21.89.

Dodge vehicles included are the 2015 to 2018 Challenger, and the 2014 to 2018 Charger, Journey and Durango, while affected Jeeps include the 2014 through 2018 Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and the 2018 Wrangler.

The recall includes 15 Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and Ram models from six model years. The company is urging customers to follow the recall instructions and get the repairs done as soon as possible.
