"His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much", a network rep said.

"My heart breaks for Tony Bourdain", CNN's chief worldwide correspondent, Christiane Amanpour, wrote on Twitter. The afternoon vibrated with life.

Bourdain was a master of his crafts - first in the kitchen and then in the media.

"He's irreverent, honest, curious, never condescending, never obsequious", the judges said.

The Smithsonian once called Bourdain "the Elvis of bad boy chefs" and "the original rock star" of the culinary world.

Bourdain's profile began to soar in 1999, when the New Yorker magazine published his article "Don't Eat Before Reading This", which he developed into the 2000 book, "Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly".

The book set him on a path to global stardom.

He went on to write numerous memoirs, cookbooks and travel books including: Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook, A Cook's Tour, The Nasty Bits, Bone in the Throat, Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook, and No Reservations: Around the World on an Empty Stomach.

This news was confirmed by CNN in a statement. Bourdain quickly became one of the principal faces of the network and one of the linchpins of the prime time schedule.

He died by suicide while working on a new Parts Unknown episode in France. What do you eat? One tweet said, "Can we use the word "rapist" now?"

Bourdain is the second high-profile figure to take his life this week, following designer Kate Spade, who was found dead at her home in NY on Tuesday.

Suicide rates rose in almost every US state from 1999 to 2016, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The center recommended a broad approach to prevention, including boosting economic support by states, supporting family and friends after a suicide, and identifying and supporting those at risk. Twenty-five states experienced a rise in suicides by more than 30%, the government report finds.
