Vettel, meanwhile, played down any advantage he might have.

The 2013 race was more about the midfield making into the points and challenging for the podium than it was about the victor.

Mercedes also typically struggle to extract the same level of performance from softer tyres than their rivals and have been more conservative in their approach with just five sets of Hypersoft and five Ultrasoft, compared to eight and three sets respectively for both Ferrari and Red Bull.

Formula 1 makes its annual sojourn across the Atlantic to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix, land of poutine, maple syrup and Mounties. "So all Mercedes-powered cars will be running PU1 for this weekend, too, before receiving new units in France".

It will also be the 300th career F1 race for Spanish star Fernando Alonso, the two-time world champion now driving for McLaren.

Stroll became the youngest rookie to make it to the podium after a third place finish in Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2017.
