Some things old and some things new have been planned for the 2018 Relay For Life of Upper Illinois Valley. This year, the local organization's goal was $80,000. Others were at the Wellness Center in Niles that raised almost $33,400 and in downtown Warren around Courthouse Square that raised $196,000 for the American Cancer Society.

For Ms Broomer, there is no one thing she looks forward to each year.

"I Relay for my friends who are powerful, unbelievable survivors: Dawn, Debbie, Jean, Julie, Kathleen, Lisa, Lori, Rachel, Regina, Sharon, Tim". The event challenges teams to have at least one member on the track at all times to symbolize the ongoing fight against cancer. Her cancer levels were down as she headed into the holidays. Participants can raise money as a part of a team or individually. Advances in cancer prevention, early detection, treatments, better access to mammograms and care are possible because the ACS puts the money raised by volunteers back into communities like Henry County. "I think I was afraid of being scared".

McMurter lost her father to lung cancer 14 years ago this month. It's unbelievable what one person can do.

"If people want to know more before the event opens, they'll have to get involved in the planning committee", Hetzler exclaimed.

Jodee found sponsors and individuals willing to donate to her daughter's fundraiser through social media. Jodee encouraged her to raise money too.

" I mean just getting through the days, that's all I can say, it was just very tough", said Leslie Antley, Cooper's sister.

"It brings tears to your eyes that they would wait for us ... they were glad to see that she made it around one more time", she said.

"We had about 300 participants a year ago, said O'Rourke". "The event is definitely growing again". The most notable change this year will be the move to Mendota High School for the event. Last year, participants raised nearly $100,000 locally.

Kathy Leek, 53, of Walmart's Team Kathy, was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in November 2017.

The Sydney Relay for Life event is in its 16th year.

Relay for Life is an annual event that takes place in cities all across the country, including here in Wausau.

It's been almost two decades since this worldwide movement came to Logan County, and for many, it has become an annual tradition to come together to enjoy a night of fun and fellowship, celebrating those who have beaten cancer and those who are going through the battle, as well as honoring their caregivers and remembering those who lost their lives to this dreaded disease.

"Relay for Life is a great event for everybody because it involves the whole community".

Molly Jackson and Vicki Snyder lead off the survivors lap, followed by a caregiver lap.
