Manchester United and Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld valuations £20m apart

Jose Mourinho and Ed Woodward have made an impressive start to their summer transfer dealings, completing the signings of Brazil global midfielder Fred and highly-rated Portuguese right-back Diogo Dalot for a combined total of over £70m this week.

It's still relatively early days yet, and so United are expected to add at least a couple more new faces in time for the new season. The Belgian global was a mainstay in the Spurs defence prior to an injury last season.

The Red Devils are not able to negotiate a deal for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld with transfer negotiations £20 million apart. The Standard claim Tottenham's interest in Frenchman Anthony Martial has strengthened Man Utd's position, and it may make Spurs more open to negotiating a fee.

Sources have told ESPN FC that United are willing to pay around £50m for Alderweireld, but negotiations have hit a sticking point with Tottenham valuing the 29-year-old at closer to £70m.

Alderweireld is set to fly out for the World Cup finals this week so United will have to get the transfer sealed soon as Belgian boss Roberto Martinez won't want the player distracted by transfer business in Russian Federation.

Mourinho is said to have identified a few alternatives should a move for Alderweireld not happen.

The French defender joined Sevilla in January 2017 for €5m from Nancy and scored four goals in 48 appearances last season but caught the eye during the club's Champions League campaign.

The 22-year-old would cost considerably less than Alderweireld. Raphael Varane, who Mourinho signed for Real Madrid, is also an option, as is Bayern Munich's Jerome Boateng.
