NHS workers vote to accept three-year pay deal

The deal, which now does not extend to GP staff as they are not on Agenda for Change contracts, would see affected staff receive a pay rise of between 6.5-22% over three years.

However, it means that more than a million NHS workers - including cleaners, nurses, physiotherapists, paramedics, midwives and radiographers - will see an increase in pay for the first time in nearly a decade.

"Most importantly, the extra funding means the pay rise won't be at the expense of services or patient care".

Janet Davies, chief executive and general secretary of the RCN, said: 'After today, the Government can not assume that the thorny issue of NHS pay has been put to bed.

NHS staff will get the additional money in July 2018 pay packets, backdated from April 2018.

The deal, which means an average 6.5% wage increase for staff, will be funded from a special £4.2bn allocation from central government, meaning that no funds will be diverted away from NHS services.

Today, the nurses' representative body said it formally backs the Government-proposed deal, after 77% of members voted in favour of proposals.

Every NHS worker will now be paid a minimum of £8.93 an hour, with the pay rise providing a significant boost to the lowest paid workers such as caterers, porters and administrators.

Josie Irwin, of the Royal College of Nursing, said it was "much needed" and "should make the profession more attractive".

She said: 'By standing together, the NHS unions were able to reject all unpalatable demands to cut annual leave or unsocial hours payments and get the best possible deal from a Government still committed to austerity'.

The chair of the RCN College Trade Union Committee, which was in favour of the deal, added: "We don't see this decision as the end of our fight for fair pay, but rather a good first step".

GMB officials will meet next week to decide their next move after members rejected the deal by nearly nine to one. Over 83,500 members voted in a turnout of around 30%.

In the statement released by the Department of Health and Social Care, Mr. Hunt said; "This is an incredibly well deserved pay rise for staff who have never worked harder".

'Salaries will increase from between 6.5% and 29%, with some of the biggest increases for the lowest paid.
