North Korea was established after World War II, and Japan's rule over the peninsular was appropriated by the victors: South Korea to the US, North Korea to the Soviet Union.

Washington is demanding the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearistion (CVID) of North Korea.

Pompeo says that USA sanctions on the North will remain in place until the North denuclearizes. "If diplomacy does not move in the right direction.those measures will increase".

Mr Kim's summit with Mr Trump has captured intense global attention after a turn to diplomacy in recent months replaced, for the time being, serious fears of war previous year amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests. Trump turns 72 on Thursday.

Authorities have beefed up security around the hotels where Trump and Kim (Saint Regis) will be staying in central Singapore.

His sister and close aide Kim Yo Jong is also in Singapore, and is believed to have travelled separately on the ageing Soviet-made Ilyushin-62 that is Kim's personal aircraft. However, others reported that the Air China Boeing 747 took off before the leader's jet did by an hour or two as a security measure to avoid making his mode of transportation known.

Some 2,500 journalists are reporting on the event, which is costing Singapore government about SGD 20 million.

Washington hopes the summit will kick-start a process that eventually sees Kim give up his nuclear weapons, read the BBC report, adding that the United States wants North Korea to get rid of its nuclear weapons in an irreversible manner that can be verified internationally.

The cost of hosting around 2000 worldwide media was put at $S5 million, but Lee said the publicity and boost for Singapore's global standing was worth it.

"It is our contribution to an worldwide endeavour which is in our profound interest", he told reporters on Sunday.

Donald Trump has sat down for lunch with his Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Both sides were finalizing preparations for the meeting, which was to kick off at 9 a.m. Tuesday with a handshake between Trump and Kim, an image sure to be devoured around the world.

A United States official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Monday's meeting appeared aimed at making 11th-hour progress ahead of the summit since Sung Kim's earlier talks did little to narrow a gap between the two sides on the definition of denuclearization or win agreement on tangible commitments from Pyongyang toward dismantling its nuclear arsenal. Their hotels are cordoned off with heavy security.

"The fact that we have been chosen as the site of the meeting... says something about Singapore's relations with the parties - with America, with North Korea - (and) also our standing in the worldwide community", said Lee.

Trump and Kim planned to meet one on one, joined only by translators, for up to two hours before admitting their respective advisers, a USA official said.

The two sides met to narrow differences ahead of Tuesday's summit between Trump and Kim, at which the two leaders will discuss efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

In 1994, just as North Korea's ability to produce nuclear weapons was confirmed, the Clinton administration signed the "Agreed Framework" requiring North Korea to eliminate its nuclear weapons programme in return for normalisation of economic and diplomatic relations.

"North Korea's increased dialogue with other countries is a positive step, but before the world gets too excited they should remember that Kim Jong Un still presides over perhaps the most repressive system in the world", he said.

"We will not be surprised by any scenario", said the official.

"It's unknown territory in the truest sense but I really feel confident", Trump said.

Behind the scenes, officials held talks for almost three hours at a neutral hotel, seeking to bridge gaps over "denuclearisation", which means vastly different things to the two parties.

But he has since lowered expectations, backing away from an original demand for North Korea's swift denuclearization.
