Gabriel Jesus and Philippe Coutinho also netted in a comfortable win ahead of Brazil's opening World Cup game against Switzerland next Sunday.

Coutinho drilled a low, long-range effort that drew a fine save from Heinz Lindner and the Austria goalkeeper brilliantly denied Paulinho with his feet shortly after Thiago Silva planted a Neymar corner wide.

Neymar started a game for the first time since injuring his metatarsal in February although he played in the second half of last week's win 2-0 over Croatia when he celebrated his return with a goal.

Marko Arnautovic gave Brazil a couple of early frights before the South Americans went ahead in the 36th minute, Jesus scoring with a delightful dinked effort from a hard angle for his 10th goal in 17 internationals.

"I wanted to pay homage to him in some way because he is an idol. When we spring him into action in the last third of the field, he is lethal". Similar fouls were committed by Florian Grillitsch in the 35th and Sebatian Proedl in the 53rd.

Costa is expected to be a backup for Neymar during the World Cup. Fred underwent further examinations in Vienna this weekend. The Brazilian figure dropped from 72 per cent in 2013, the year before the country hosted the World Cup. Since turning into an ever-present for Zinedine Zidane in La Liga, Casemiro has developed into one of the world's best holding midfield players and Brazil have benefitted for it.

Those who like statistics are already salivating: Unless there is an injury, Thiago Silva is set to start the World Cup alongside Miranda in the heart of defence.

However, when Tite took over as manager in August 2016, his plan was to rehabilitate Brazil's much-maligned 2014 World Cup captain. It saw a seven-match winning streak, including victories over World Cup host Russian Federation and world champion Germany, come to an end.
