New York City FC have appointed Domenec Torrent as head coach, replacing the outgoing Patrick Vieira.

The Major League Soccer side are part of the City Football Group founded by Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour.

"Though I have been fortunate enough to visit NY on numerous occasions, I am looking forward to living and coaching in this special city and meeting the fans as soon as possible".

Vieira took over NYCFC in their second season in MLS in 2016 and in both seasons led the team to second-placed Eastern Conference finishes, only to lose at the first hurdle in the playoffs.

"Through its chairman Jean-Pierre Rivere, OGC Nice has announced it was looking for a coach with the ability to continue to play flowing football, bring on young players and take the risk of having them evolve while bringing a winning spirit to the table".

Vieira became a household name in England after joining Arsenal from AC Milan in 1996 as he went on to become the driving force behind three Premier League title successes under Wenger. "We know that leaving the club has been a hard decision for him, but we understand his choice to return to Europe where he spent his whole playing career", team vice chairman Marty Edelman said.

The Ligue 1 side have confirmed that Vieira has taken over from Lucien Favre, who steered the Eagles to an eighth-place finish in the French top tier last season before departing for Borussia Dortmund. His contract will run until the end of the 2020 season.

"I really couldn't have hoped for a better opportunity than at this football club", said Torrent, who has been with Guardiola the past 11 years. "I know we have a very talented team".

Edelman was pleased to move so quickly to replace Vieira.

Enjoying dominance on a domestic and a European stage, the pair has won over 24 trophies together.
