Spain's national coach Julen Lopetegui will replace Zinedine Zidane as Real Madrid coach after the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

Lopetegui is now in Russian Federation preparing the Spanish squad for the World Cup.

'Real Madrid CF announces that Julen Lopetegui will coach the first team for the next three seasons.

Lopetegui will put to pen to paper on a three-year deal at the Bernabéu running until 2021, the club confirmed.

In May, he signed a two-year extension to remain as Spain coach until 2020 but the call of Madrid has proved stronger.

After guiding Spain easily through qualification to the World Cup finals, Lopetegui had agreed on a new contract up until Euro 2022 just last May, and was not among the more than 20 names which had been linked with the Bernabeu vacancy in the local media over the past two weeks.

He also played for both Real Madrid and Barcelona, although he only played one league game for Madrid, and five for Barcelona.

Lopetegui returned to club management with Porto in 2014, but he was sacked midway through his second season after failing to deliver silverware, leaving the club in January 2016 with the club third in the league, and out of the Champions League.

He previously managed Porto and the Spanish underage teams. That U21 side featured the likes of David De Gea, Thiago, Koke and Rodrigo Moreno, all of whom have made it into the Spain squad for this summer's World Cup.

They face a World Cup group containing Iberian rivals Portugal, as well as Morocco and Iran.
