The search to replace Zinedine Zidane, who left after guiding Real to a third-straight Champions League title, lasted nearly two weeks, with Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte and Jurgen Klopp among the names reportedly in the frame.

Manchester United fans are fearing that David De Gea is edging closer to Real Madrid after the Spanish club confirmed the appointment of Julen Lopetegui as their new manager.

Julen Lopetegui on Bale in 2015, "A player at Real Madrid has to give 100% all the time".

Julen Lopetegui managed Real Madrid B team between 2008 and 2009, as well as Porto, Real Vallecano and Spain U19's, U20's and U21's during his 15 years in management.

Zidane quit Real on May 31, saying he had made a decision to leave at the top and that it was time for a change for himself and the club, as well as admitting he was unsure of his ability to maintain his winning record at Real.

Zidane's resignation came as a big shock, as he had just led Real Madrid to a third consecutive UEFA Champions League triumph.

La Roja kick off their campaign against Portugal on Friday and this news will now dominate all the pre-match and pre-tournament talk in the Spain camp.

It remains to be seen if he will head to Real as a World Cup victor, though Spain's squad is stocked with exciting talent.

Real Madrid have won La Liga just once in the last six years, which for a club of their stature and spending, is a poor return despite their European success.

In addition, he remains something of an unknown quantity as a coach. At the very highest level, however, he is still somewhat untried.
