Kim was accompanied by Kim Yong Chol, the former spy chief and one of North Korea's chief negotiators, as well as Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, former Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui, Minister of the People's Armed Forces No Kwang Chol, Workers' Party of Korea Director Han Kwang Sang, and Party First Deputy Director Kim Yo Jong.

Trump left his hotel first but arrived about seven minutes after Kim.

Before signing what Trump described as a "comprehensive" document, Kim said the two leaders had a historic meeting "and made a decision to leave the past behind". The two men walked out together, with Trump extending his hand first. A United States official says Monday that the leaders will meet for up to two hours before an expanded bilateral meeting with their respective advisers.

Inside, they sat alongside each other against a backdrop of North Korean and U.S. flags, with Kim beaming broadly as the USA president gave him a thumbs up. I think better than anybody could have expected.

This Memorandum of Conversation will be supplied to the US National Archives and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and could take the form of a transcript or simply be paraphrased notes.

Trump and Kim emerged from about 40 minutes of discussions between the two of them and their translators, with the USA president describing the pair as having an "excellent relationship".

Pompeo on Monday drew a firm line, saying the US plans to keep sanctions in place until North Korea eliminates its nuclear weapons capability.

Dessert included dark chocolate tartlet and Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream. The North Korean leader's sister and close confidante Kim Yo Jong was among the lunch party. "Getting a good picture everyone, so we all look nice and handsome and thin.perfect".

He and Trump are set to meet Tuesday morning in the first summit of its kind between a leader of North Korea and a sitting U.S. president.

Any nuclear deal will hinge on North Korea's willingness to allow unfettered outside inspections of the country's warheads and nuclear fuel, much of which is likely kept in a vast complex of underground facilities.

Sanctions on North Korea would remain in place until that happened, Pompeo said on Monday.

After Kim made clear that he would be leaving Singapore by the end of the day, the White House announced that Trump would depart in the evening after delivering his afternoon news conference.

Hours earlier, a jet carrying Kim landed.

"I too, got little sleep last night", Moon told his cabinet in Seoul as the summit began in Singapore.

"Wide-ranging and profound views on the issue of establishing new DPRK-US relations, the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula, the issue of realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern, as required by the changed era, will be exchanged at the DPRK-US summit talks", the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported in English.
