Longtime economic commentator Larry Kudlow has stepped into the middle of a high-profile, worldwide controversy between President Donald J. Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

When he was a CNBC contributor before taking the White House job, Kudlow argued the metals tariffs Trump had announced would harm consumers.

Kudlow, a former Wall Street economist and television host, was selected by Trump to serve as Director of the National Economic Council in March.

Over the weekend, Kudlow waded into a tense back-and-forth between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after the Group of Seven gathering of the world's major industrial nations in Canada's Quebec province. The associates spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of Kudlow's health status.

"It was a betrayal", Kudlow told Tapper of Trudeau having said in the news conference Saturday that Canada will "move forward with retaliatory measures" on July 1 in response to the Trump administration's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico. "He is now in Walter Reed Medical Center", said the message sent minutes before he was scheduled to meet Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, in Singapore.

The New Jersey native - who worked on Democratic political campaigns with Bill Clinton as a student - worked in Ronald Reagan's White House and later as chief economist at the Bear Stearns investment firm.

Kudlow's wife, Judith, was said to be with Kudlow at the hospital, according to a friend of the family.

Kudlow, who is a wry and upbeat speaker, has adopted some of Trump's hard-line rhetoric while working inside the West Wing. His recovery has always been a source of pride for him and his friends, contributing to his optimistic outlook.
