Carlos Queiroz furious over Iran Nike World Cup football boots snub

Iran's football coach Carlos Queiroz has called on Nike to apologise to his team after the American sportswear firm said it could not supply the players with boots for the World Cup due to sanctions.

The decision was accompanied by new economic sanctions.

"Sanctions applicable to NIKE have been in place for many years and are enforceable by law".

The Nike moves comes at a time of tense relations between Washington and Tehran, with President Donald Trump last month pulling out of the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement and re-imposing sanctions it had previously waived.

"We have addressed this concern to Federation Internationale de Football Association and the minimum Nike should do is to apologise to them (Iran's players)".

According to the US Treasury, any US entity found in violation of sanctions could face hefty fines.

Some Iranians have spoken out against Nike's decision to adhere to them and encouraged others to boycott the company's products, using the hashtag #NoToNike on Twitter.

"Players get used to their sports equipment, and it's not right to change them a week before such important matches", ESPN quoted Queiroz as saying.

"We are only managers and footballers, and should not get involved in such matters".

Nike, who was set to sponsor the team with cleats and footwear throughout the tournament, announced that it had withdrawn its support of the team for the World Cup because of global economic sanctions against the country.

Nike confirmed in a statement they are unable to provide kit to Iran due to the United States sanctions now in place against the country. "They have now become symbols of humiliation", he said.

"Nike is a private company and its only objective is to satisfy its shareholders. This is the impact of politics on trade rather than political interference in sport", said another.

The players have been practicing with the shoes, which they received before beginning their training ahead of the World Cup.
