Crawford scores TKO over Horn, wins WBO welterweight title

He wants to be the Queenslander who took on world boxing's greatest mountain and conquered it.

"When you're away from home, you have to win your rounds more clearly". It includes the impressive scalp of Manny Pacquiao, but with a bit of an asterisk given the fearsome Filipino was past his best. "Terence would just get that odd shot, just that little bit more".

Crawford dominated, dropped and stopped Horn in the ninth round of their title bout that headlined an ESPN+ card in Las Vegas. If things get tough, Rushton has a simple message for the champion.

Though he never appeared frustrated, Horn couldn't find a rhythm against Crawford, who chuckled in the middle in the fourth, the same round he opened a small cut on Horn's left eyebrow. Effortlessly, Crawford absorbed the hard-charging Horn the entire fight, while dodging the big blows and countering effectively to wear down his opponent. Even when he managed to land some hard shots in the sixth Crawford met him with big body shots and a sizzling uppercut and rather than be intimidated by Horn's superior size and strength he was able to throw him around into the ropes. The fight was well beyond Horn's powers of recovery and nothing good was going to come of continuing. Though it's been close to one year since Crawford has been in the ring, when he fought at 140, he looked every bit the part of a hard-hitting welterweight.

"I knew this was coming", he said. "That to me is a great, great compliment because I always thought Leonard was the best, and this guy is equal or better than Ray".

The two unbeaten fighters meet Saturday night for Horn's welterweight title in a fight that offers an intriguing matchup of brawler versus boxer in a division that is suddenly getting a lot of attention in boxing.

"His future is unlimited".

IBF title-holder Errol Spence is seen by many as the top welterweight, while Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter will fight for the WBC strap in August and WBA champion Keith Thurman is expected to return from injury in September.

Horn relaxed last night playing poker with his corner team knowing the stakes are huge today and that Crawford has turned into something like the cartoon villain Nasty Canasta.

Crawford, Horn's mandatory challenger, put his name into the mix for major fights with any of them if they could be made, but first he had to deal with Australia's Horn, who made his United States debut for the second defense of the world title he lifted from Pacquiao by controversial decision last July before 51,000 people at Suncorp Stadium in his hometown of Brisbane.

Jeff Horn insists he left the ring without his head buzzing but admits to hearing voices at stages during his loss to Terence Crawford.

Glenn Rushton, Horn's trainer, gave credit to Crawford for a fine performance but complained about the stoppage. According to betting site Vegas Insider, Crawford is a -800 favorite, while Horn is a +550 underdog.
