Fred is yet to be unveiled as a United player, however, the deal is done, with the Red Devils agreeing a £52m fee with Shakhtar.

The Daily Star and The Sun are two of the papers convinced that the tough-tackling Tottenham defender will soon be on his way to Old Trafford.

The same article says that the asking price could end up being the major sticking point in any deal.

But the Manchester Evening News has a different take on the transfer, claiming that Alderweireld "isn't a top transfer target on Manchester United's eight-man shortlist".

The Red Devils are looking to sign at least three more players this summer window after reportedly pinpointing the positions they Mourinho feels needs strengthening.

Varane has always been linked with a move to Old Trafford and Mourinho is a known fan of the French international's as he was the man in charge when Madrid signed him from Lens in 2011 so a reunion could be on the cards if United could agree a fee with Madrid.

United are believed to only be willing to pay as high as £50m for the Belgian, whereas Spurs want £70m, and other names such as Raphael Varane, Jerome Boateng, Kalidou Koulibaly, Milan Skriniar, Alessio Romagnoli, Jose Gimenez and Caglar Soyuncu are also on Mourinho's list. According to the Daily Express United "are in pole position to sign Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford".
