The United States is Canada's single biggest trade partner, with two-way exchanges of goods and services totalling $673.9 billion in 2017, and Washington enjoys a $8.4 billion surplus.

Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., slammed President Donald Trump's treatment of G-7 allies.

Trump said a photograph released by German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman that went viral captured a friendlier mood than what the snapshot conveyed to many analysts.

If the tariffs are implemented, they will be applicable to all countries, including the US' largest imports - Mexico and Canada.

Trump said he was retaliating against Canada with countervailing tariffs, saying of Trudeau: "He learned that's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada". The response by Donald Trump was a tweet mentioning Trudeau as "dishonest & weak" and his remarks as "false statements". At a news conference after his meeting with Kim, the president said the Canadian leader must not have realized that Trump had televisions on Air Force One, allowing him to monitor Trudeau's news conference at the end of the G-7 summit.

"Fair trade is now to be called fool trade", he added in response to the threat of the retaliatory tariffs against the US.

Well, if the Western group of nations cannot get used to the mercurial character of President Trump, what can be expected from other world leaders.

He stressed the countries have to work together. "The United States believes in the key role of energy transitions through the development of market-based clean energy technologies and the importance of technology collaboration and innovation to continue advancing economic growth and protect the environment as part of sustainable, resilient and clean energy systems".
