De Niro a staunch Trump opponent, repeatedly dropped the f-word to an audience at the Tony Awards Sunday night while referencing Trump.

Specifically, Trump hit back at actor Robert De Niro over his pretty succinct slam of Trump during Sunday night's Tony Awards.

Yes, even a man who effectively represented the Western world to one of the planet's most notorious dictators still managed to have his ego bruised by an entertainer's outbursts. At least these units aren't in charge of leading worldwide diplomatic efforts.

During the Tony Awards, De Niro, who has frequently sparred with Trump, drew a standing ovation with an anti-Trump rant. "Fuck Trump. It's no longer down with Trump".

De Niro hit out at the USA president as he introduced a performance by Bruce Springsteen.

"Celebrities saying stuff like that about Trump is exactly what Trump talks about to his base and they go, "Yeah, I'm sick of these Hollywood elites being like that" - do they not put that together?" he asked.

The CBS television network, which was broadcasting the event live but with a delay of a few seconds, bleeped out De Niro's expletive.

"I just want to make a note of apology for the idiotic behavior of my president", he told the crowd. "It's a disgrace. And I apologize to [Canadian Prime Minister] Justin Trudeau and the other people at the G7".

Trump says he believes De Niro "may be 'punch-drunk, '" adding, "Wake up Punchy!"

Trump was on his way to Singapore to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as the Broadway awards show was taking place.
