Voters will decide if California should be split into three states

This comes after the group behind the idea, Cal 3, gathered enough support and delivered more than 600,000 signatures to the Secretary of State.

The proposal would make California the L.A. area, Northern California and Southern Cal would be the other two new states.

The southern state would comprise Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera, and Mono.

California: This will be considered the new state which includes Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and San Benito counties.

The proposal was spearheaded by a venture capitalist who says regional communities would function better. If passed, the measure would still need congressional approval to move forward. "Think of North Carolina and South Carolina; North Dakota and South Dakota; West Virginia and Virginia - California is already known for its Northern and Southern identities", according to the Cal 3 website.

California gets 55 electors in the Electoral College - a powerful number that has been a huge unmovable bloc for the Democratic candidate.

The plan would create three differently sized regions, but all would have roughly the same population. "Splitting California into three new states will triple the amount of special interests, lobbyists, politicians and bureaucracy".

In 1992, Stan Statham, an assemblyman from Northern California, embarked on "a quixotic campaign to split California in three", as Sacramento's News & Review recalled.

In 2013, he launched Six Californias, a plan that would divide up the Golden State into six states.

Getting an initiative on a November 2016 ballot required about 808,000 signatures.

This will not be the first time such a ballot would take place.

You might have heard the buzz around CalExit - efforts to have California secede from the nation.

He has described California as a state with crumbling bridges and roads, a struggling, underfunded education system and oppressively high taxes.
