After a weekend spent vying for peace, U.S. President Donald Trump is punching back against actor Robert De Niro, calling him a "low IQ individual".

".realize the economy is the best it's ever been with employment being at an all time high, and many companies pouring back into our country".

Oh, yeah, and he went ahead and nicknamed Robert De Niro "Punchy".

The president's tweet came just days after De Niro declared, "f-k Trump" while onstage at Sunday's Tony Awards.

Donald Trump issued a furious rebuke to Robert De Niro on Twitter this evening after a whirlwind 48 hours at the North Korea summit in Singapore. In his acceptance speech, Springsteen said, "Thanks for making me feel so welcome on your block". 'It's no longer down with Trump.

De Niro's first prominent act of speaking out against Trump arrived in a PSA video preceding the presidential election in October 2016, when the actor called Trump a "dog", a "mutt", a "con", and an "idiot", and said of then-candidate Trump, "I'd like to punch him in the face".

'Look at our president.

Of course, De Niro has made no secret of his hatred for Trump - he previously said "Trump's so blatantly stupid". (Pictured at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival).

The actor has always been a vocal critic of the president.

And, after the f-bombs at the Tonys on Sunday night, it looks like De Niro is staying true to his word about speaking out. De Niro, who's been cameoing as Robert Mueller on Saturday Night Live, was in Toronto today to open his new restaurant with celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Canadian Nobu. And I apologize to [Canadian Prime Minister] Justin Trudeau and the other people at the G7.
